Because Maharashtra has seen seismic activity over the past years, the state’s politics have seen an unparalleled upheaval. The equation of state politics was drastically altered by the Shiv Sena uprising and the subsequent NCP split. The two parties divided vertically, giving rise to two distinct groups. As a result, the Lok Sabha this year will be difficult and prestigious for all parties. The Grand Alliance, led by the BJP, and the MahaVikas Aghadi, the opposition party, are still at odds over seat sharing in the state. But the Congress, the BJP, the Shiv Sena (Thackeray group), and Ajit Pawar and the Congress have declared candidates for a few seats. However, the Shinde group and the NCP Sharad Pawar group have not yet made their official announcement of their candidates.

In the Maharashtra Lok Sabha elections of 2019, the BJP emerged as the winner, taking up 23 of the 25 seats it ran for. In the meantime, the Shiv Sena, its former ally, won eighteen of the twenty-three seats it had run for. However, the NCP ran for 19 seats as a member of the opposition alliance and was successful in four of those contests. These outcomes demonstrated the BJP’s hegemony in that state’s election system.
The Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Ajit Pawar, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are preparing to run together in the Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra. Taking into account the historical dynamics of the state’s politics, this alliance represents a substantial political alignment.
But when the Shiv Sena broke apart in 2022, after having previously teamed up with the Congress and the NCP to form a coalition government following the 2019 Assembly elections, Maharashtra’s political landscape saw a significant upheaval. Most of the party’s MPs and MLAs, including Eknath Shinde, left the alliance and formed a new one with the BJP. As a result of this action, the saffron party was able to establish a coalition government in Maharashtra, where Shinde was appointed chief minister.
In the same way, Ajit Pawar, a well-known figure in the NCP, masterminded a defection that resulted in a sizable number of MLAs siding for the coalition government of the BJP and Shiv Sena. As a result, the Election Commission and the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly acknowledged the Shinde and Ajit Pawar factions as the “real” Shiv Sena and NCP, respectively.
The upcoming Maharashtra Lok Sabha election 2024 are expected to be fiercely contested as the political environment in Maharashtra changes. The Shiv Sena-NCP-BJP combination is expected to bring about significant changes to the dynamics of political campaigning and voter mobilization.
