In its resolution 66/281 of July 12, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly announced March 20, 2012, to be the International Day of Happiness. This declaration acknowledged the significance of health and happiness as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of people worldwide, as well as the necessity of their inclusion in public policy goals. It also realized the need for a more equal, balanced, and inclusive approach to economic growth that supports happiness, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development, and the welfare of all humanity.

International days and weeks are opportunities to raise public awareness of important concerns, rally support for global solutions through political action, and recognize and celebrate mankind’s contributions.

Governments and international organizations ought to make efforts in opportunities that promote happiness by respecting human rights and adding environmental and well-being aspects to frameworks for policy, like the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
